Timbarra College P-9 will strive to ensure that all our students are happy, confident and able to establish meaningful relationships. We will provide a safe and supportive environment that contributes to positive learning outcomes and the wellbeing of all students, staff and the broader community.

Attendance

Timbarra College understands that full attendance is a key to engagement and maximises every student’s ability to learn and our teacher’s ability to teach effectively. Timbarra has actively embraced the ‘It’s Not Ok to be Away’ approach and student’s attendance is monitored effectively by all teachers and the school’s leadership team.

You Can Do it Education

You Can Do It! Program Achieve is a program we use for teaching students how to set attainable goals and be happier in school life. It is a program designed for all our students from Prep to Year 6. All students will be taught how to set achievable goals (academic and social) at a grade and individual level. Goals will be measured and success celebrated. Fortnightly achievement certificates are awarded at our fortnightly school assemblies.

Values Education

At Timbarra College there is an emphasis on teaching all of our student’s pro-social values such as responsibility, tolerance, kindness, cooperation, loyalty and respect. The values approach at our school is seen to be an essential element of aiming high and academic excellence in educational results. These values are embedded in our teaching and learning practices, rather than added onto them. There is a deliberate focus on values in our ‘Value of the Fortnight’ program. We focus on the responsibility of all members of the school community to work cooperatively in partnership and show tolerance to individual and group differences. Social skills are also embedded in classroom practice and are included in variety of assessment tools.

Restorative Practices and whole school positive behaviour support

Timbarra College P-9 introduced Restorative Practices in 2007 to encourage engagement and build pride, respect and responsibility in each individual student. This has been extended to the classroom and is the basis for respectful communication, relationships and dealing with behavioural issues.

Restorative practices are intended to move away from a punitive consequence that is based on the establishment of wrong doing. Rather it seeks to value and support those involved so that they feel empowered to take positive action to address the situation and move forward. Restorative Practices is about being respectful of every member of our school community, encouraging responsible behaviour and actions and ensuring that personal pride and dignity is maintained. All staff at Timbarra have adopted the principles of Restorative Practices in the management of student wellbeing.

Effective Behaviour Management

Good relationships, pro-social values and an engaging curriculum underpin behaviour management at this school. Classroom expectations and consequences are displayed in every room throughout the school as well as in specialist areas

Yard Duty teachers carry a ‘Yard Incident’ folder at all times. All incidents are recorded and followed up immediately after both recess and lunchtime breaks by the Duty Manager for that day (membership of the leadership team). All data is entered into a data base so that reoccurring incidents can be addressed and support given to all parties involved.

The emphasis on behaviour management at Timbarra College focuses on re-educating students about pro-social values and behaviours. The Timbarra College P-9 Student Engagement and Wellbeing procedures are based on an encouragement philosophy to foster a school culture where personal responsibility and self-discipline will be developed.

SunSmart

Our SunSmart policy has been developed by students and teachers to ensure that all students and staff attending Timbarra College P-9 are protected from skin damage caused by harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. This policy is to be implemented throughout the year but with particular emphasis from September to April inclusive. (Terms 1 & 4). We require all students to wear broad-brimmed or legionnaire hats whenever they are outside (e.g. recess, lunch, sport, excursions and outside curriculum related activities).

We pride ourselves in our commitment to the area of Social Services and see it a significant component of our wellbeing program.

We have a number of intervention programs and practices in place to support our students to attend school, participate in class and enjoy their learning opportunities.
