The Early Years Numeracy Program has been designed as a resource for schools to use in planning and implementing a strategic and comprehensive approach to mathematics teaching and learning. The program is based on the recognition that all children can succeed in mathematics given sufficient time and support and that students will be competent and confident in their early mathematical learning.
Mathematics is taken on a regular basis during the one hour numeracy block. Typically mathematics lessons begin with a whole class focus. Children may then work in small groups, with a partner or independently while the teacher works with the focus group. Lessons conclude with a sharing of the strategies children used during their learning. Students work at a level that both challenges them and at which they can be successful. They are exposed to open ended tasks that challenge and extend their abilities.
